Castello Vicchiomaggio is a wine-growing and wine-producing estate that extends over about 140 hectares of land, 24 of which are cultivated with vineyards.
Among the varieties cultivated stands out Sangiovese, a traditional grape that is fundamental for the production of Chianti Classico. There are, however, other international varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Castello has been owned by the Matta family since 1964, and its origins date back to 956, as reported in some ancient writings.
Its location on top of a hill overlooking the Greve Valley - just 18 km from Florence and 38 km from Siena - has proved to be a highly strategic position over the centuries.
The Vicchiomaggio Castle, built of solid stone whose fulcrum is the high crenellate tower dating back to 1100, preserves around the castle houses and defense walls. Thanks to careful restoration, is now perfectly preserved and has been recognized as a national monument.
Currently the Castle host its cellars, the restaurant and the agritourism.
